Avoid Analytics Data Overload
Utilizing Google Analytics to the Fullest
You’ve successfully installed the Google Analytics code on your site — now what?! You log into the Analytics Dashboard only to find a plethora of tabs and reports that would make almost anyone want to close the browser and call it a day.
First off, don’t panic. Start with the basics.
Step 1: Establish Goals and How You’ll Measure Success
Maybe it’s sales, or maybe you want to increase brand awareness. Just make sure your objectives are actionable, manageable, and truly beneficial.
From there, establish some Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that will measure how you’re actually doing against your objectives. For example, if your objective is to sell products, the goal could be to increase revenue. Your KPIs could then be the average order value, shopping cart abandonment rate, or number of unique purchases.
Step 2: Track these Metrics
Let’s say unique purchases is one your KPIs. When you’re in the “Standard Reporting” screen in Analytics, click on the E-Commerce Overview tab. Then, you’ll be on a user-friendly screen that includes not only the number of unique purchases, but also other valuable metrics, such as the conversion rate and the total revenue. This information is great, but it gets even better.
By using “Advanced Segments”, you can further examine your overall performance by breaking it down into specific segmented campaigns. You can separate the traffic from your AdWords campaign, organic search traffic, referral traffic, and more … with just the click of a button.
Step 3: Use the Knowledge to Optimize your Marketing Budget
With this knowledge, you’re able to make more informed decisions on budgeting time and resources for the different areas of internet marketing.
For example, if you notice a number of transactions from a refferring forum site where users are actively discussing your products and services, consider interacting on this forum as well! Answer questions, address concerns, reach out to individuals to offer discounts, etc.
The expression, “If you build it, they will come” is usually not the case in online marketing.
